The Puget Sound has suffered from a lot of kidney stones this summer. After a kidney stone, you have a 50% chance of getting another stone within five years. What can you do to protect yourself against another stone?
- Drink lots of fluid. Your urine should never be darker than a light yellow.
- Low salt diet
- Low protein diet. The source of the protein does not change this risk.
- Low oxalate diet. Oxalate is a naturally occurring compound found in large amounts in spinach, beets, nuts, chocolate, and teas.
- Maintain a healthy weight.
These are LIFETIME changes in your habits. By far, the most important thing you can do is increase your fluid intake. Good luck!
